"Tomorrow Never Knows" closes Revolver by throwing out nearly every convention the Beatles had used to that point. Lennon's lyric, largely drawn from a Tibetan Book of the Dead-inspired text, called for a vocal that sounded transcendent and impersonal rather than like a pop singer — his famous instruction to engineer Geoff Emerick was, in essence, make me sound like a monk chanting from a mountain, not like myself. Emerick's solution was to route Lennon's vocal through a Leslie speaker cabinet — the rotating speaker built for Hammond organs, never intended for a human voice — capturing the swirling, doppler-warped tone that resulted. It was, at the time, a genuinely strange thing to do to a vocal chain, and it worked instantly.
The whole track sits on a single droning chord — no chord changes to follow, which is disorienting the first time and hypnotic on every listen after — while Ringo Starr's compressed, tom-heavy drum pattern loops underneath like a machine long before drum machines existed in pop music. Then the loops arrive: a seagull-like shriek that's actually a distorted guitar, a rising orchestral swirl, fragments of laughter and sitar-adjacent drones, all swimming in and out of the stereo field with no fixed rhythm relative to the song. None of it resolves the way a guitar solo resolves. It just happens to you, the way the lyric's instruction to "turn off your mind" asks you to stop analyzing and just float.
Homework, brought to the studio
The tape loops weren't studio inventions so much as homework the Beatles brought in. Paul McCartney and the others had been separately experimenting at home with tape recorders, over-recording sounds to erase the original, running tape backward, speeding up and slowing down familiar recordings until they became abstract textures — guitar, laughter, orchestral samples, all mangled past recognition. They arrived at Abbey Road with a stack of these loops, and the version that made the final mix required an almost theatrical live performance from the engineering team: multiple tape machines set up around the control room, each looping a different sound, with engineers and assistants physically holding loops in tension using pencils and their fingers so they'd play back at the right speed, while George Martin and Emerick rode the faders in real time, deciding in the moment which loops surfaced and when. The mix itself was a performance, done once, printed to the master.

This is also, quietly, an ancestor of the era's other great tape trick: engineer Ken Townsend's invention of Artificial Double Tracking at Abbey Road that same year, an automated tape-delay process built specifically to save the Beatles from re-singing every vocal twice — and, decades later, recognizable as the direct ancestor of chorus and flanging effects. Every era's tape manipulation, it turns out, eventually becomes tomorrow's plugin.
What it opened
"Tomorrow Never Knows" is routinely cited as one of the earliest and most influential psychedelic rock productions, and its DNA runs through everything from Pink Floyd's studio experimentation to sample-based hip-hop's willingness to treat found sound as raw material rather than decoration. The deeper inheritance is a mindset more than a technique: the studio itself, not just the instruments inside it, could be the instrument. Once that idea existed, it never left.
